The Department for Medical Informatics of the University Medical Centre Göttingen is lead by Prof. Dr. Otto Rienhoff since 1995. The ca. 30 employees have comprehensive know-how in the planning, installation and evaluation of IT solutions in healthcare. Their research projects are specialised in the testing and evaluation of early prototypes of IT systems for health professionals and institutions of the healthcare sector. The results of this research are used in the teaching courses of the deparment. Furthermore the department operates professional training and an extensive doctorate program. Cooperation and networking are in the center of work plans with industry and research institutions. About 1 Mio. € third party funds are acquired annually from the EU, BMBF and the German Research Community (DFG). The department leadership operates the IT infrastructure for several consortium research projects in clinical and health services research through the CIOffice research network. The working group "Point of Care Design" of the Department for Medical Informatics has an application and industry orientation. It analyses and evaluates the use of assistive technologies and tele-monitoring applications in healthcare, with a focus on the transition from the laboratory phase to the real use of such technologies on the market. Related projects: Personalized Health Monitoring - Ethics (PHM), Information Chain Management for an Improvement of Patient Care (IKM-health), Efficient Configuration of Telemedical Services (EDiMed).
