OFFIS - Institute for Information Technology

The OFFIS Institute for Information Technology, founded in 1991, is an application-oriented non-profit research and development institute related to the Computer Science department of the University of Oldenburg and supported by the state of Lower Saxony, Germany. Its primary mission is to study new forms of computer supported information processing in hardware and software systems and to implement the research results into application oriented developments. Work is focussed in three research and development divisions: Health, Transportation and Engery. About 250 employees are working in publicly funded projects as well as in development, consultancy and contract research projects. Some 70% of the annual budget of approximately 13M€ are acquired from third-party funds. The OFFIS “Health” R&D division focusses its work in four thematic groups: Intelligent User Interfaces, Data Management and Data Analysis, Integration Technology and Medical Device Technology. For more than 15 years, the OFFIS “Health” R&D division has been studying issues of technical integration of IT systems in the healthcare sector and since 2005 also in the field of Ambient Assisted Living (projects: GAL, Hearing at Home, IDEAAL, OSAmI, PAALiativ, PAGE, SAPHIRE). OFFIS is active in standardization (technical management for IHE Germany, membership at DIN and HL7, collaboration with the DICOM Committee). Leadership of the "Interoperability" working group of the German BMBF/VDE Innovation Partnership on AAL.
